Age assurance FAQs

KICK has partnered with k-ID, an age assurance and verification technology provider.

Please note that, due to jurisdictional differences, not all verification methods are available to all Viewers.

Q1: What is k-ID?

A: k-ID is an age assurance provider designed to simplify how children and teens access age-appropriate online experiences.

k-ID’s mission is to create a safer online environment for children, giving parents peace of mind while their children enjoy the digital world.

Q2: Does k-ID keep my selfie?

A: No. Your information is used only for the age check by the verification provider and is deleted once the process is complete.

For facial age estimation, facial data is processed locally, and images never leave your device.

For questions about k-ID’s processes, please contact k-ID.

Q3: What if the k-ID automatic age check fails?

A: After the verification attempt, you will see Age Check Complete at the top of your Active Violations screen.

You can try k-ID verification again, but we may limit how many times you can use this method on appeal. At any time, you can choose to use the photo ID verification method instead.

Q4: When unlocking my account with photo ID, do I need to take multiple photos for verification?

A: You only need to scan the front and back of your ID. All required information on the ID must be readable in the image.

Q5: How will my verification information be used?

A: The information you provide will be used only for age verification purposes and will not be used for anything else.

Q6: Do you save my personal information when you verify my age?

A: No. k-ID uses third-party data verification services and does not retain any sensitive information you provide during the verification process. This includes credit card details, national ID numbers, and face scans.

These details are used only to verify that you meet the required age threshold, helping ensure compliance with legal requirements for protecting children online.

Q7: Will I be charged when I use my credit card to verify that I am an adult?

A: Your credit card information will be used strictly for verification purposes. Your card information is used to verify whether the card is active.

k-ID does not receive or save your card details, and you will not need to pay to verify that you are an adult. However, in some jurisdictions, you may see a small charge on your account that will be refunded within a few days. This is used to confirm that the card is valid.

Q8: Why does k-ID ask for my credit card information?

A: k-ID uses the credit card information you provide to legally confirm that you are old enough to provide consent on behalf of the requesting child, in accordance with applicable laws.

k-ID partners with Stripe, one of the world’s leading payment processors, to verify the credit card information provided. Your credit card information is collected and processed by Stripe, and neither k-ID nor Stripe stores this information after it is validated.

For verification purposes, parents and guardians may see a small charge on their credit card to confirm that the card is active. If there is a charge, the amount will be automatically refunded within 1 to 14 business days.

Q9: How do we know k-ID is trustworthy?

A: k-ID’s mission is to help keep children safe. k-ID understands the sensitivity around sharing personal information online, especially when children and teens are involved.

k-ID earns revenue through paid integrations with its customers, rather than through the collection or monetization of personal data.

k-ID meets or exceeds legal standards for privacy and data protection around the world. k-ID’s data processing activities have been audited and certified by both the Entertainment Software Rating Board, also known as ESRB, Privacy Certified Program and the UK Age Check Certification Scheme, also known as ACCS.

Q10: How does k-ID keep information secure?

A: k-ID takes steps to ensure that all information provided by Viewers is handled securely and in accordance with its Privacy Policy and applicable law.

k-ID meets or exceeds legal standards for privacy and data protection around the world.

Its data processing activities have been audited and certified by both the Entertainment Software Rating Board, also known as ESRB, Privacy Certified Program and the UK Age Check Certification Scheme, also known as ACCS. k-ID also holds ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2019, and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications.

Q11: Why do I have to enter my age?

A: Laws around the world are designed to protect children and teens, but not every country defines “child” and “teen” the same way. In some jurisdictions, different laws and rules apply to different age thresholds.

We need to know your age so we can provide the right experience for you.

Q12: Why is my experience different from my friends in other countries or states?

A: Different jurisdictions have different legal requirements, so your experience may vary based on where you are located.

Q13: I’ve been blocked from accessing KICK. Why?

A: Platforms may have restrictions that prevent Viewers from accessing the service if they are under a certain age.

You may be able to attempt each verification method multiple times. If you are having technical issues, please contact k-ID’s technical support at: k-ID Technical Support.

Q14: What is an AgeKey?

A: An AgeKey is a reusable, privacy-preserving age token stored on devices you own. Your AgeKey lets you provide proof of your age online without sharing your identity.

Q15: What are AgeKeys for?

A: AgeKeys are used to prove whether you are a child, teen, or adult, depending on your country’s laws, in a fast, private, and user-controlled way.

Think of an AgeKey like a digital version of a 21+ wristband you might get at a venue. It lets staff know you are an adult without revealing who you are.

Once you get an AgeKey, you can reuse it anywhere AgeKeys are accepted as proof of age.

Q16: How is an AgeKey different from classic age checks?

A: Traditional systems ask you to prove your age every time you want to access age-restricted content or spaces.

An AgeKey is created once and stored locally on your devices, where it can be reused anywhere that supports it.

Q17: How do I use AgeKeys?

A: If a site or service accepts AgeKeys as a verification method, select that option and follow the prompts to access the AgeKey from your device.

Your device or browser may ask you to authenticate yourself with a security check, such as Face ID on an iPhone, before you can access your saved AgeKey. This helps ensure only the device owner can access their AgeKeys.

Q18: Do I need an account to use AgeKeys?

A: No account or password is needed to generate or use an AgeKey.

AgeKeys work through passkeys built into your phone, browser, or password manager.

If you have an account that allows you to share passwords across multiple devices, such as iCloud or Google Password Manager, you can also sync your AgeKeys across other devices you own. This makes it easier to prove your age.

Q19: Can I delete or deactivate my AgeKey?

A: Yes. You can delete or deactivate your AgeKey anytime through your device’s password manager.

Q20: What happens to my AgeKey if I change devices?

A: You can create a new AgeKey or retrieve an existing AgeKey using your password manager, such as Google Password Manager or iCloud.

Q21: What data is stored in an AgeKey?

A: Only the following data is stored:

  • Your age range, such as “This Viewer is over [x] age”

  • The method you used to prove your age, such as a credit card check, face scan, or ID scan

  • When the AgeKey was created

No data that identifies you as an individual is stored.

Q22: How are AgeKeys secured?

A: AgeKeys are protected with biometric and passkey security.

No one can use your AgeKey without your device and your permission. If your device is stolen, your AgeKey remains secure.

Make sure not to share your device passcode with anyone. If someone can unlock your device, they may also be able to access your passwords and passkeys, including your AgeKey.

Q23: Can we have multiple AgeKeys on the same device?

A: Yes. Each family member can have their own AgeKey, including children, teens, and adults, even on a shared device.

However, the device owner must still pass the device’s security check before any AgeKey can be selected and used.

Q24: I am still having trouble verifying my age. Can I verify my age manually through KICK Support?

A: Please contact [email protected] for assistance with manual age assurance reviews.
