Australian social media minimum age requirements

Age assurance

Key update for australian viewers

The eSafety Commissioner enforces Australia’s online safety laws under the Online Safety Act 2021. Recently, the Social Media Minimum Age, also known as SMMA, obligation was introduced as an amendment to the Act.

Based on our self-assessment of our platform’s features and purpose, we have determined that KICK is captured by these requirements. This core obligation requires us to take reasonable steps to prevent Australian Viewers under the age of 16 from having accounts.

Importantly, this measure delays access to our service until the Viewer turns 16. It is set to commence on 10 December 2025.

What will we be doing?

If you are an Australian Viewer, we will ask you to securely confirm your age using the k-ID system. This step is mandatory to help ensure our platform complies with the new law.

You will be required to complete this age assurance workflow by 10 December 2025. This process is designed to respect privacy and is necessary to continue accessing our service.

Our core safety commitments

  • We use layered age assurance methods to help confirm the viewer's age.

  • We will detect and deactivate accounts held by Australians under 16 with care and clear communication.

  • We provide clear review pathways for Viewers to appeal age determination decisions.

Why are we doing this?

We believe in creating a safer online environment, and this change is driven by our duty of care to our Viewers.

By implementing age assurance, we fulfil our legal obligations under the Online Safety Act 2021 to reduce the risk of harm to young Australians. This proactive step helps enhance the safety and well-being of younger community members by limiting their exposure to specific online risks, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and unwanted contact.
