Moderation

Moderation

Kick prides itself on providing a multitude of moderation and safety options for Streamers and Viewers alike. We have summarized all the options available to you to best moderate and enhance your Kick experience.

Personal Moderation Options

Users can utilize the mute function if they do not want to see messages from a specific user.

Mute & Unmute Users

Muting Users

A muted user’s messages will be hidden across all chatrooms on Kick.com from the user who muted them.

You may mute a user in any chatroom by opening their profile and clicking at the

Mute Icon web or at the “Mute” Menu Item mobile. A pop-up will ask for user confirmation of the mute action. If confirmed, the target user will be Muted.

At this point, the Mute Icon will receive a green background colour and the “Mute” Menu Item will have its label updated to “Unmute” until that same user is Unmuted.

After being Muted, all messages from that user will be hidden, not only the new messages but also the already existing ones too.

Unmuting Users

It is possible to unmute users by opening the Chatroom Settings menu - located at the right side of the Chatroom’s Message Input - and then selecting the Muted Users option.

A new panel should be shown, containing a list of usernames that have being Muted (if any) and also a counter of how many users the list contains displayed at the bottom.

Each username should have a Trash Icon button on the same line, which when clicked should Unmute that username.

It is also possible to unmute a user that has just been muted through the same button used for Muting (at the user’s profile modal), as soon as this modal is still open. After closing this modal it won’t be possible to re-open it as all messages from that user will be removed from the chat.

When Unmuting users, their old messages won’t be restored! Only messages arrived after being unmuted will be displayed.

Block & Unblock Channels

This feature is currently available only in the Mobile App.

Blocked Channels will have their thumbnails blurred and their Stream Title redacted. Blocked Channels are saved locally, meaning that if the app is uninstalled the Blocked Channels list will be lost.

Blocking Channels

At any of the Stream Cards listed on the app, you will find a Vertical Ellipsis button at the right side of the card’s Title. This button opens the Block and Report modal, where blocking a channel turns possible.

At this modal, after clicking on the Red Block Button, a confirmation message will pop up. If confirmed, the channel will be blocked.

Unblocking Channels

There are currently two ways of unblocking a channel:

  • Clicking at the Unblock button displayed at the bottom-right corner of the blurred thumbnail of a blocked channel’s Stream Card.

  • Through the Blocked Channels List.

Blocked Channels List

At the app’s Header Bar (accessible from any of the main pages), users can find their Avatar at the right side. Clicking on it should bring up the Profile Menu which contains a link for the Blocked Channels List.

At the Blocked Channels List it is possible to unblock any of the previously blocked channels by clicking at the Trash Icon.

Global Moderation Options

Chatroom Ban

When users are Banned from a chatroom they are unable to send messages, and their past messages are dimmed (i.e. like this) and struck through (i.e. like this) until they get Unbanned.

Only Moderators, Channel Owners and Kick Staff can Ban/Unban users.

There are two types of bans:

  • Timeout: A temporary ban. The duration is defined when a user is being banned.

  • Ban: A permanent ban. Users that have been permanently banned can only be manually unbanned by any of the users with the privileges to do it.

Timeouts can also be manually “cancelled" before their duration fully elapses.

Banned Users List

To check which users are banned in a given chatroom, users with enough privileges have access to the Banned Users List, which can be opened from the Chatroom Settings menu.

The Banned Users List provide a sortable and paginated list of all users that are currently banned or timed-out in that same chatroom, including a Search Field that can be used to help finding some usernames when the list includes too many records.

The list also includes information regarding who banned the user, when, for what reason (if a reason was provided at the moment of the ban), expiration date (when it’s a timeout, otherwise it will just display “Permanent") and a button for unbanning that user.

When the provided Reason is longer than the space provided on the table it will have an ellipsis. Clicking on it will expand that text in order to show the full content.

Banning

It’s possible to Ban someone either using the button on the user you wish to ban’s profile or through Chatroom Commands. When banning through Commands, it’s also possible to specify a reason why that user is being banned.

Through the Profile Modal, it’s just a matter of toggling the Ban item at the Moderation Options (“middle saturated orange" options):

If using Commands, the syntax for Banning someone is /ban <username> [reason]. The username is a required and case-sensitive parameter and Reason is an optional one. The Reason can contain space characters and a maximum length of 255 characters.

Unbanning

Users can be Unbanned either through the Profile Modal, through Commands or through the Banned Users List - accessible from the Chatroom Settings menu.

As when Banning, through the Profile Modal, it’s just a matter of toggling off the Ban item at the Moderation Options (“middle saturated orange" options).

Through commands, the expected syntax is /unban <username> where the username is a required and case-sensitive parameter.

At the Banned Users List, it’s possible to search for the banned user’s username and then click at the Trash icon located at the right-side of the same row as the username.

Timeout

The process to Timeout users is almost the same of Banning them. Basically, the only difference is that a duration also needs to be provided.

If Timing-out from the Profile Modal, after clicking at the Timeout Toggle, located at the Moderation Options (“middle saturated orange" options) some extra options will appear, where some predefined durations will be provided along with an Input Field where a custom amount of time can be set.

Be aware that by only enabling the Timeout toggle does not Timeout the user! The Timeout will only be applied after clicking on any of the duration options, even if it’s the already selected one.

When Timing-out through Commands it’s also possible to specify a reason why that user is being Timed-out. The command syntax is /timeout <username> <minutes> [reason], where:

  • username is required and case-sensitive

  • minutes are also required and should be a number between 1 and 10080 (≡ 7 days)

  • reason is optional and should have a maximum length of 255 characters

Removing a Timeout:

The process of removing a Timeout is nearly exactly same Unbanning.

Deleted Messages

Messages can be deleted by any user with enough privileges, namely, Channel Owners, Moderators and Kick Staff.

It is not possible to recover a deleted message.

Although both cases being displayed with dimmed colours, the content of the Deleted Messages will be different between Privileged Users and Common Users:

  • For Privileged Users, they content will be kept untouched, but the(deleted)text will be appended to the message:

  • For Common Users the message’s content will be completely replaced with the Deleted by a moderator text:

Deleting

If a user has sufficient privileges to delete a message, they may follow the process below:

  • Hover the message to be deleted and click at the Trash icon web

  • Open the User Profile modal and click on the “Delete Message" item mobile

When browsing from Web, there’s also a possibility of Deleting messages through the Moderation Quick Actions This feature shows some moderation shortcuts at the left side of all messages at the chat, allowing quicker moderation reactions. These shortcuts can be activated at the Chatroom Settings menu, by toggling the “Show mod quick actions" item.

Chat Rules

Streamers can use the Chat Rules feature to communicate specific rules to their communities.

This feature displays a panel over the Message Input field that only allows users to send messages after they have clicked at the Accept button.

Chat Rules can be added via the Kick Dashboard, by expanding the left sidebar’s Community group and then selecting Chat Settings. It is currently not possible to update the Chat Rules from the mobile app.

The maximum length for the Chat Rules is 255 characters. It’s also possible to use multiple lines, which count as 1 character each.

Blocking Words and Terms

Owners and Moderators can block words from being used at the chatroom by marking them to be automatically redacted in all messages.

This can be done in three different places, but only through the Kick website.

  • The Chat Settings Page at Kick Dashboard

  • The Blocked Terms section of the right-sidebar of the Creator’s Dashboard

  • The Blocked Terms section of the right-sidebar of the Moderator’s Dashboard

Blocking Hyperlinks

Channel Owners may also block all messages containing URLs. To do so, the Channel Owner needs to visit the Kick Dashboard web, expand the left sidebar’s Community group and then select Chat Settings. At the Chat Settings page it will be possible to control this behaviour by toggling the respective option:

Managing Moderators

Channel Owners can assign and un-assign Moderators for their channels at any moment. To do so, all they need is either to use a Chat Command (/mod <username> or /unmod <username>) - which is available in both web and mobile app - or access the Kick Dashboard through web, expanding the left sidebar’s Community group and then selecting Moderators.

At the Moderators Page you may assign new users as moderators by clicking at the Add New button, located at the top-right side of the page. After the click, a row with a Search Field will appear. This field can be used to locate the desired user. After filling it and selecting the right user at the search results, clicking on the Add button should complete the process.

To remove a Moderator through that same page, it’s just a matter of clicking at the Remove button found at the same row as the desired user’s username.

Chatroom Modes

Privileged users are also able to prevent selected groups of users from sending messages or even defining a cooldown period which will need to be awaited after each message sent in order to send a new one.

Followers Only

This mode allows only users who are Following the channel to send messages in the chatroom. When activating it through the Creator’s Dashboard or Moderator’s Dashboard, it’s possible to choose a cooldown period for new followers to wait out until they can send messages.

Subscribers Only

This mode allows only users who are Subscribed to the channel to send messages in the chatroom. Activating it follows the same process as activating the Followers-only mode, but the menu option for that will be shown only when the channel has Subscriptions enabled.

Slow Mode

With Slow Mode active, users will be allowed to send only one message in the time period defined during its activation.

Example: If 5 seconds Slow Mode is active and a user has just sent a message, the same user will only be allowed to send the next message after a 5 seconds cooldown elapses.

Emotes Only

While the Emotes-only mode is active, only messages containing Emotes (and nothing else) is allowed. Any messages containing any kind of text content will be blocked. Unicode Emojis (e.g. 🤠🥳🥸😎) are also considered text and therefore prohibited.

Moderator Dashboard

All tools available at the Moderator Dashboard are also available at the Creator’s Dashboard.

This dashboard - available only at the web version of the application - includes every tool needed for moderating a channel. In order to improve your experience you can customize the layout by hiding and resizing the main panels, toggling the sidebars and also easily switch the current channel being moderated through the top menu.

Layout Editor

Clicking at the Edit button, located at the page headers, toggles the Layout Editor mode, allowing the Stream Preview, Activity Feed, Mod Actions and Chat panels to be resized. After finishing resizing them, clicking at that same button again should save the changes.

Toggling Panels

Through the Panel Toggles, also available at the page headers, it’s possible to hide/show each of the main panels. Hiding a panel will make others resize to fill the emptied area.

Switching Channels

When the current user moderates more than one channel, it should be possible to quickly switch between them through the Channel Menu, located at the top-left corner.

Channel Actions

On the right sidebar, moderators are able to toggle Chatroom Modes and Advanced Bot Protection, and also manage the Blocked Terms.

While the channel is live a preview of the livestream will play inside this panel.
