Moderation features guide

Moderation

Moderation

KICK provides a range of moderation and safety features for Streamers and Viewers. This guide summarizes the options available to help you moderate and customize your KICK experience.

Personal Moderation Options

Personal moderation options allow Viewers to control what they see across KICK.

Mute and Unmute Chatters

Muting Chatters

If you do not want to see messages from a specific Chatter, you can mute them.

A muted Chatter’s messages will be hidden across all chat rooms on KICK.com for the Viewer who muted them.

To mute a Chatter in any chat room:

  1. Open the Chatter’s profile.

  2. Click the Mute icon on web, or select Mute from the menu on mobile.

  3. Confirm the mute action in the pop-up.

Once confirmed, the Chatter will be muted.

After a Chatter is muted, all messages from that Chatter will be hidden. This includes both new messages and messages that were already visible in the chat room.

Unmuting Chatters

To unmute a Chatter:

  1. Open the Chat Room Settings menu, located on the right side of the chat room’s message input field.

  2. Select Muted Chatters.

  3. Click the trashcan icon next to the Chatter you want to unmute.

A panel will appear with a list of muted Chatters, if any, along with a counter showing how many Chatters are muted.

You can also unmute a Chatter from the same button used to mute them in the Chatter’s profile modal, as long as the modal is still open. After closing the modal, you will not be able to reopen it from chat, as all messages from that Chatter will be removed from the chat room.

When you unmute a Chatter, their old messages will not be restored. Only messages sent after they are unmuted will be displayed.

Block and Unblock Channels

This feature is currently only available in the KICK Mobile App.

Blocked channels will have their thumbnails blurred and their stream titles redacted.

Blocked channels are saved locally, meaning that if the app is uninstalled, the blocked channels list will be lost.

Blocking Channels

On any stream card in the app, click the vertical ellipsis icon on the right side of the card title.

This opens the Block and Report modal. From there, click the red Block button. A confirmation message will appear. If confirmed, the channel will be blocked.

Unblocking Channels

There are currently two ways to unblock a channel:

  1. Click the Unblock button displayed in the bottom-right corner of the blurred thumbnail on a blocked channel’s stream card.

  2. Unblock the channel through the Blocked Channels list.

Blocked Channels List

In the app’s header bar, Viewers can click their avatar on the right side to open the profile menu. This menu contains a link to the Blocked Channels list.

From the Blocked Channels list, you can unblock any previously blocked channel by clicking the trashcan icon.

Global Moderation Options

Global moderation options help Channel Owners, Moderators, and KICK Staff manage chat rooms.

Chat Room Bans

When Chatters are banned from a chat room, they cannot send messages, and their past messages are dimmed and struck through until they are unbanned.

Only Moderators, Channel Owners, and KICK Staff can ban or unban Chatters.

There are two types of bans:

  • Timeout: A temporary ban. The duration is defined when the Chatter is timed out.

  • Ban: A permanent ban. Chatters who have been permanently banned can only be manually unbanned by someone with the required permissions.

Timeouts can also be manually removed before their duration ends.

Banned Chatters List

To check which Chatters are banned in a chat room, people with the required permissions can access the Banned Chatters list from the Chat Room Settings menu.

The Banned Chatters list provides a sortable and paginated list of all Chatters who are currently banned or timed out in that chat room. It also includes a search field to help find specific Chatters when the list has many records.

The list includes information about:

  • Who banned the Chatter

  • When the ban was applied

  • The reason for the ban, if provided

  • The expiration date, if it is a timeout

  • Whether the ban is permanent

  • An option to unban the Chatter

If the provided reason is longer than the available space in the table, it will be shortened with an ellipsis. Clicking it will expand the text to show the full reason.

Banning Chatters

You can ban a Chatter from their profile modal or by using a chat command.

From the profile modal, toggle the Ban option under the moderation options.

To ban a Chatter using a command, use the following syntax:

/ban <username> [reason]

The username is required and case-sensitive. The reason is optional, can include spaces, and can be up to 255 characters long.

Unbanning Chatters

Chatters can be unbanned from their profile modal, through a chat command, or from the Banned Chatters list.

From the profile modal, toggle off the Ban option under the moderation options.

To unban a Chatter using a command, use the following syntax:

/unban <username>

The username is required and case-sensitive.

From the Banned Chatters list, search for the banned Chatter’s username, then click the trashcan icon on the same row.

Timeout

Timing out a Chatter follows a similar process to banning them, except a duration must also be provided.

From the profile modal, click the Timeout toggle under the moderation options.

Additional options will appear, including predefined durations and an input field where a custom amount of time can be entered.

Please note that enabling the Timeout toggle alone does not time out the Chatter. The timeout will only be applied after you click one of the duration options, even if that option is already selected.

To time out a Chatter using a command, use the following syntax:

/timeout <username> <minutes> [reason]

The command includes:

  • username: Required and case-sensitive.

  • minutes: Required. This must be a number between 1 and 10,080, which is equal to 7 days.

  • reason: Optional. This can be up to 255 characters long.

Removing a Timeout

Removing a timeout follows nearly the same process as unbanning a Chatter.

Deleted Messages

Messages can be deleted by anyone with the required permissions, including Channel Owners, Moderators, and KICK Staff.

Deleted messages cannot be recovered.

Although deleted messages are displayed with dimmed colors, the message content shown will differ depending on permissions:

  • Privileged Viewers: The message content will remain visible, but (deleted) will be added to the message.

  • General Viewers: The message content will be replaced with Deleted by a moderator.

Deleting Messages

If you have sufficient permissions to delete a message, you can follow the steps below.

On web:

  1. Hover over the message you want to delete.

  2. Click the trashcan icon.

On mobile:

  1. Open the Chatter’s profile modal.

  2. Select Delete Message.

On web, messages can also be deleted using Moderation Quick Actions. This feature shows moderation shortcuts on the left side of chat messages, allowing faster moderation actions.

You can enable these shortcuts from the Chat Room Settings menu by toggling Show Mod Quick Actions.

Chat Rules

Streamers can use Chat Rules to communicate specific rules to their communities.

This feature displays a panel above the message input field. Chatters can only send messages after they click Accept.

Chat Rules can be added through the KICK Dashboard by expanding the Community group in the left sidebar and selecting Chat Settings.

Chat Rules cannot currently be updated from the mobile app.

The maximum length for Chat Rules is 255 characters. Multiple lines can be used, and each line break counts as 1 character.

Blocking Words and Terms

Channel Owners and Moderators can block words from being used in the chat room by setting them to be automatically redacted in messages.

This can be done in three places, but only through the KICK website:

  • The Chat Settings page in the KICK Dashboard

  • The Blocked Terms section in the right sidebar of the Streamer Dashboard

  • The Blocked Terms section in the right sidebar of the Moderator Dashboard

Blocking Hyperlinks

Channel Owners can block all messages containing URLs.

To do this, the Channel Owner needs to visit the KICK Dashboard on web, expand the Community group in the left sidebar, and select Chat Settings. On the Chat Settings page, they can toggle the relevant option.

Managing Moderators

Channel Owners can assign or remove Moderators for their channels at any time.

This can be done by using a chat command on web or mobile:

/mod <username>

/unmod <username>

It can also be done through the KICK Dashboard on web by expanding the Community group in the left sidebar and selecting Moderators.

On the Moderators page, you can assign new Moderators by clicking Add New in the top-right corner of the page.

After clicking Add New, a row with a search field will appear. Use this field to find the Chatter you want to add as a Moderator. After selecting the correct Chatter from the search results, click Add to complete the process.

To remove a Moderator from the same page, click Remove on the same row as the Moderator’s username.

Chat Room Modes

People with the required permissions can prevent selected groups of Chatters from sending messages. They can also define a cooldown period that must pass after each message before a Chatter can send another one.

Followers-Only Chat

Followers-only chat allows only Chatters who are following the channel to send messages in the chat room.

When activating this mode through the Streamer Dashboard or Moderator Dashboard, you can choose a cooldown period that new followers must wait before they can send messages.

Subscribers-Only Chat

Subscribers-only chat allows only subscribed Chatters to send messages in the chat room.

Activating this mode follows the same process as followers-only chat, but the menu option only appears when the channel has subscriptions enabled.

Slow Mode

With slow mode active, Chatters can only send one message within the time period set during activation.

For example, if 5-second slow mode is active and a Chatter has just sent a message, that Chatter can only send their next message after the 5-second cooldown ends.

Emotes-Only Chat

While emotes-only chat is active, only messages containing Emotes and nothing else are allowed.

Messages containing any kind of text will be blocked. Unicode emojis, such as 🤠🥳🥸😎, are also considered text and are therefore blocked.

Moderator Dashboard

All tools available in the Moderator Dashboard are also available in the Streamer Dashboard.

The Moderator Dashboard is available only on web and includes the tools needed to moderate a channel. To improve your experience, you can customize the layout by hiding and resizing main panels, toggling sidebars, and switching the channel being moderated from the top menu.

Layout Editor

Clicking the pencil icon labeled Edit in the page header toggles Layout Editor mode. This allows the Stream Preview, Activity Feed, Mod Actions, and Chat panels to be resized.

After resizing the panels, click the same button again to save your changes.

Toggling Panels

Using the panel toggles in the page header, you can hide or show each of the main panels. Hiding a panel allows the remaining panels to resize and fill the available space.

Switching Channels

When you moderate more than one channel, you can quickly switch between them using the Channel Menu in the top-left corner.

Channel Actions

In the right sidebar, Moderators can toggle chat room modes and Advanced Bot Protection. They can also manage Blocked Terms.

Main Panels

Stream Preview

When the channel is live, a preview of the livestream will play inside this panel.

Chat Room

The chat room contains the same features as the channel page chat room.

In this panel, you can moderate the chat room by using commands, deleting messages, banning, unbanning, timing out Chatters, updating mature stream flags, and more.

Mod Actions Feed

The Mod Actions Feed shows a log of moderation actions taken in the channel. It includes information such as who took the action, who the target was, amounts, timestamps, and brief details.

Events shown in this list come from Moderator actions, such as:

  • Title changed

  • Category changed

  • Blocked term added or deleted

  • Banned Chatter added or deleted

  • Mature mode toggled

  • Chatter timed out

  • Message deleted

  • Slow mode toggled

  • Emotes-only mode toggled

  • Followers-only mode toggled

  • Subscribers-only mode toggled

  • Allow links toggled

Activity Feed

Unlike the Mod Actions Feed, this panel shows a log of events triggered by Chatter or Viewer actions, such as:

  • New subscriptions

  • Gifted subscriptions

  • New followers

  • Hosted channels

Footnotes

  • Web: Only available on KICK web.

  • Mobile: Only available in the KICK Mobile App.
